Mt. Vesuvius


Of course, I could not come to Naples without checking out Mt. Vesuvius. Since it's erruption in 79 AD (when it destroyed both pompeii and herculaneum), it has erupted more than 50 times. Casual. I'm going to keep telling myself that it probably isn't due for a new eruption until after I leave.

This litle blurb from Wikipedia makes me feel all warm and fuzzy:

"Today, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency towards explosive (Plinian) eruptions. It is the most densely populated volcanic region in the world.[4]"
